Ishan Jayawardhana

M.D. Ishan Dulanjaya Jayawardhana (born 05 November 1993) is a country level cricketer and the head cricket coach of Ruwanwella Royal College, Sri Lanka. Ishan generally plays as a bowling all-rounder with handy right-arm leg spin with a unique action.

His vast enthusiasm towards fielding from the younger age made him a top – notch fielder in country level cricket. 

Ishan has surpassed several milestones in his career, from the days at school. He began his cricket career, playing for his school’s under 13 cricket team while uplifting his skills enough to guide his team as the vice-captain. He hold this position in under 15, 17 and 19 teams and was able to guide the team to be the district champions of 2013 as well.

While leading the team, he won the award for the best fielder of the Kegalle district in 2010.During his career in club cricket, he became the “Man of the Match” for several instances. Later, his dedication infused with performance let him secure the coaching position for under 15 & 13 category at the Singhalese Sports Club (SSC) and academy, which is a first-class cricket club in Sri Lanka.    

Early Life

Ishan Jayawardhana was born in Ruwenwella, Sabaragamu Provice, Sri Lanka in 1993. He is the elder child of a family with two siblings and grew up in Ruwanwella with his parents.

Ishan received his education at Ruwanwella Royal College and is excelled in many sports including Ruger and Karate. He had played for Havelock Sports Club for a short period of time and holds a blue belt for Karate.  However, his deep desire towards cricket from very younger age encouraged him to focus on cricket. He represented his school’s Under-13, Under-15, Under-17 and Under-19 cricket teams and hold the vice-captaincies for 15, 17 and 19 teams. He was a member of the Under -13 team, where they acquired district championship and was awarded as the best fielder in 2010.

Although, his main focus was in to the cricket, he didn’t give up on studies as well. He successfully nailed the General Certificate of Education in Advanced Level in Arts stream, soon after enrolled in to a diploma program in Journalism at Sri Lanka College of Journalism and acquired it in 2014.  

Domestic Career

Ishan joined Bloom field cricket club after leaving school in 2013. Years later, he got the opportunity to be the part of prominent cricket clubs of the country including Colts Cricket Club (CCC), Badureliya Sports Club and Sinhalese Sports club (SSC), which were the birth places of most of the prominent cricketers in Sri Lanka.

His performance during the SSC, paved the way to for the origin of his coaching career as well as to represent the cricket team of Sri Lankan Army in 2018.

Coaching Career.

During his time at Sinhalese Sports Club, Ishan has showed a huge commitment to uplift his career, their head coach who identified Ishan’s capability had offered him the coaching opportunity to guide their Under-15 & 13 teams in 2017. This had been a remarkable milestone of Ishan’s career.

From there on wards, he continued private coaching session till the end of 2019, where he expanded his coaching career up to a cricket academy, which started in early 2020 with the name of “Fielding Jaya Cricket Academy”.

His academy was initially based on his home town Ruwanwella. However, with the emergence of pandemic situation, he expanded his coaching sessions in to the digital world, facilitating the cricket enthusiastic youngsters in the other end of the country.

For the youngsters and cricket lovers who couldn’t get private coaching sessions, Ishan launched his YouTube channel with the name of his academy “Fielding Jaya”, in mid-2020 which is becoming popular day by day.

Considering the dedication and commitment of this player to uplift local cricket, Ishan has been appointed as the head coach of his school, Ruwanwella Royal College in 2021.   

Goals and Vision

Although Ishan has started his cricket career to be a National level cricketer, his intension has bit derived to guiding and coaching youngsters to achieve their dreams. Since he gets popularity and requests for coaching throughout the country, his future intension is to organize and share knowledge via coaching camps under his cricket academy.

In addition, Ishan is hoping to scale up his profession career from level-01 to further as well.
